Life expectancy of furniture

We all know that nothing in this world lasts forever. One day, the milk in your fridge will expire, your toothbrush will worn-out, your boots will fell apart, and the fruit in your basket will start rotting. In simple words, nothing lasts forever, everything around us has its own lifespan and it will need to be replaced or renewed after that. Some things have a longer lifespan while some have a quite shorter lifespan.

Similarly, the furniture present in your house also has its own lifeline and its performance will significantly decline after that specific lifespan, so you will have to replace it. Many people in Singapore don’t know anything about the life expectancy of furniture present in their house. In this article, we have covered everything about furniture life expectancy and after reading it, you will have a lot of knowledge about the life expectancy of furniture present in your home. So let’s start the article.

How long does furniture last?

There is no short answer to this question because the different furniture items have a different lifespan. Moreover, there are a lot of factors that play a significant role in determining the lifespan of the furniture. We have covered it all here in this article.

Mattress

According to studies, an average person spends one-third of their lifespan on the bed. Therefore, a mattress is the most used furniture item present in your home. Moreover, a mattress is very important for your general health as well because its job is to provide you the crucial rest and sleep your body needs to stay healthy. The average life expectancy of a mattress is about 5-10 years. But if your mattress is of high-quality then it may have a longer lifespan.

However, you are highly recommended to get rid of your mattress if it is stinky, not supportive, and does not provide comfortable sleep anymore.

Pillows

Pillows are excessively used along with the mattresses and beds. A mattress as mentioned above may have a bit longer lifespan but you can’t say the same about pillows. Pillows can be used for 2-3 years at least. However, there are some exceptions to this. If your pillows are of low-quality then they will probably flatten even before 2-3 years. So if your pillows have become allergic, flat, smelly, and uncomfortable, do not wait for 3 years to replace them. Just get rid of them as soon as possible.

Sheets

Have you ever noticed that some people have the same old greasy sheets even after ten years, however, let us tell you that you should not use sheets for a long time. The average lifespan of sheets is about 2 years. The moment they start getting yellow, stained, and smelly, it is time to throw them out.

Dinnerware

All of us have some dinner sets at our home that have been passing down from generation to generation. Why? It is because dinnerware is immortal. They can last for an infinite amount of time unless you end up throwing them down and break them. Overall, that Chinese dish in your house will last for tens of thousands of years if taken care of properly.

Sofa

As you know there is a wide range of sofas available in the market. Some are built for office purposes and some are made for home use. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the exact lifetime of a sofa due to its variety. However, on average a sofa lasts somewhere between 7-15 years. It depends upon the quality of the material and the process involved in the manufacturing of the sofa. If your Sofa is making cracking noises whenever you sit on it, its cushions are uncomfortable, flattened, and there are visible stains on it, then it is a signal that now is the right time to replace it.

Carpets

Just like sofas, carpets are also available in a wide range of variety like from commercial use to domestic household use. Moreover, there is a significant difference in the quality of carpets. So the exact lifespan of your carpet depends upon the quality of its material and construction. If you purchased the least expensive carpet then it will last for 1-5 years. If your carpet is of medium grade, which means that somewhere between low-quality and high-quality carpets, then it will have a life expectancy of 5-15 years. Whereas, if money is not a problem for you and you have purchased a luxurious carpet of premium quality then it will last for almost 15-25 years.

Dryer and washer

Drying and washing machines are essential for every house. Dryer and washers usually have a lifespan of 10-15 years. After that time they will either break down or their performance will start degrading and they won’t clean your clothes the way they used to do.

Wooden chair

We all have wooden chairs at home and we use them for different purposes. However, the lifespan of a wooden chair depends upon the quality of the wood and the conditions in which you use it. For example, if the chair is subjected to rough use and bears extreme weather conditions in your garden then it will last 3-4 years only. But if you will take proper care of the chair then it can last up to many years. That is why we have dozens of years old antique furniture present in different antique shops in Singapore.

Bed

The bed is one of the basic necessities of life. Some of us have old beds at home that have lasted for several decades and some didn’t even last for a few years. The lifespan of a bed also depends upon its quality and construction. The better the quality, the longer it will last. Whenever the bed frame starts making cracking noises it’s a sign that you should replace it before it collapses with you sleeping on it.

Shower curtains

As shower curtains are always exposed to water, they are prone to mold, mildew, and fungus. Therefore, they only last for 6 months to one year. You can extend their life by regularly drying them, but that’s a strenuous job. So it is better to replace them after every 6-12 months to maintain the hygienic conditions during your shower.

How to increase life expectancy of furniture

  • Take Good Care

The only way to increase the life expectancy of furniture is to take good care of it. That is the reason we have hundreds of years old antique furniture present in different shops because it was handled with extreme care.

  • Use Alternative Items

For sheets, mattresses, and chairs, you can purchase an extra piece and use them alternatively. This way you will be able to extend their life by preventing them from excessive use and wear and tear.
